Char Dham Yatra Route Gets EV Charging Stations as the Uttarakhand government begins operationalising electric vehicle charging infrastructure along the pilgrimage corridor to support cleaner mobility during the annual yatra season. The move is aimed at reducing vehicular pollution and promoting sustainable travel in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.

GMVN to Host Majority of EV Charging Installations
A large number of EV charging stations have been installed at Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) guest houses and key halt points along the Char Dham Yatra circuit. According to officials, charging facilities are currently available at 25 locations, with most stations located on GMVN-managed properties to ensure easy access for pilgrims. Each charging station is equipped with a universal 60 kW charger featuring two 30 kW charging guns, allowing multiple electric vehicles to be charged efficiently during travel halts .
Chief Minister Emphasises ‘Green Yatra’ Vision for Char Dham
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has stated that the Char Dham Yatra is being organized this year with a clear focus on a “Green Yatra.” He said the installation of EV charging stations is aligned with the state government’s objective of promoting electric vehicles, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting responsible tourism. The project involves the development of 38 EV charging stations in total, with support from the Transport Department and THDC, and more stations are expected to become operational in the coming months .
Officials believe the expanded EV charging network will encourage pilgrims and tourists to shift toward electric vehicles, helping reduce air and noise pollution while protecting the fragile mountain ecosystem during the high-traffic yatra season.
