Pithoragarh Bets on Astro Tourism with New Observatory

Pithoragarh has taken a major step toward promoting science-based tourism with the launch of a public astronomical observatory. The project has been set up by the District Tourism Department in partnership with Starscapes and was inaugurated by Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj.

The observatory will host night-sky viewing sessions, astronomy activities, and educational programs for students, tourists, and residents. With Pithoragarh’s clear dark skies and high-altitude location, officials believe it can become a leading stargazing destination in Uttarakhand.

A key focus of the project is skill development. Starscapes has trained local youth under its Astro Guide Training Programme, teaching them telescope handling, astronomy basics, night-sky interpretation, and how to conduct guided sessions. These trained Astro Guides will run public stargazing experiences and help visitors understand the sky, making the model both sustainable and community-driven.

Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj said the observatory reflects a long-planned vision to bring astro-tourism to Uttarakhand and will create new opportunities for tourism and employment. District officials added that similar observatories may be set up at other locations in the future to boost responsible tourism and scientific learning in the region.
