You Can’t Visit Kedarnath Without This QR Pass

Visit Kedarnath

If you’re excited to visit Kedarnath this season, here’s something you absolutely must know before packing your bags: without completing the official registration on the Uttarakhand Tourism portal, you won’t be allowed to proceed beyond the checkpoint. Yes, even if you have hotel bookings, helicopter tickets, and a backpack full of dry fruits—you’ll be turned back.

Sounds strict? It is—and for good reason. The government has made this step compulsory to regulate crowd flow, ensure pilgrim safety, and coordinate emergency support in case of weather disruptions or natural hazards. So let’s break it all down.

Kedarnath Registration

Kedarnath registration is mandatory for all pilgrims visiting Kedarnath. This helps manage crowds and ensures safety during the yatra. Registration is completely free, and the process takes just a few minutes via the official Uttarakhand Tourism portal or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand mobile app. You’ll need to submit basic travel details, upload ID proof and a photo, and finally download your QR Code pass—which you must carry for entry during the yatra.

Important Details:

  • Official Website for Registration
  • Mobile App: Tourist Care Uttarakhand (Android/iOS)
  • Documents Required: Aadhar card / Voter ID / Passport + passport photo
  • Registration Dates: Open for all yatra dates from May to November 2025
  • QR Code: Mandatory to cross checkpoints – carry a digital or printed copy
  • Registration Fee: Free of cost
  • Required for: All travelers – whether by foot, palki, pony, or helicopter

What’s this Mandatory Kedarnath Yatra Registration?

The UTDB (Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board) has introduced a mandatory Yatra registration system for all Char Dham pilgrims, including Kedarnath. Every traveler—no matter how they’re reaching the shrine (by foot, pony, palki, or helicopter)—needs to register individually on the official website.

Without this step, you will not be issued a Yatra pass and won’t be allowed past the Sonprayag or Phata check post.

Why Is Registration for Kedarnath Mandatory in 2025?

After the 2013 floods, and again following huge crowd build-up in 2023-24, the government realized that crowd control and real-time tracking of pilgrims is non-negotiable. Here’s why this rule is strictly enforced:

  • Weather Warnings: Kedarnath is located at over 11,000 ft. Sudden landslides, rains, and snow can trigger route closures. Tracking ensures timely alerts.
  • Daily Cap on Devotees: The shrine can’t handle unlimited footfall. There’s a limit on how many pilgrims can reach Kedarnath daily.
  • Emergency Evacuation Support: In case of medical emergencies, knowing who is where helps provide immediate help.
  • Safety at Checkpoints: Every pilgrim needs to cross check posts, and the registration barcode is scanned for verification.

How to Register for Kedarnath Yatra Online – Step-by-Step Guide

Here’s how you can complete the Kedarnath Yatra registration from your phone or laptop in just 10 minutes:

    https://registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in/
  2. Click on ‘Register/Login’:
If you’re a first-time user, create an account with your mobile number and email ID.
  3. Fill in Traveler Details:
Add full name, age, gender, photo ID proof (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID), and contact details for each traveler.
  4. Select Travel Dates & Destination:
Choose Kedarnath as your destination and add your expected darshan date.
  5. Upload ID Proofs:
Scan and upload a valid government ID. Keep the size under 1MB.

Once submitted, you’ll receive a QR-based Yatra pass. Carry a digital or printed copy—this is your golden ticket.

What Happens at the Checkpoint?

There are checking points at Rishikesh, Dehradun to verify registration of each pilgrim visiting.

  • Sonprayag Check Post for those trekking from Gaurikund
  • Phata, Guptkashi, Sersi, Sitapur Helipads for helicopter passengers

Officials scan your Yatra pass QR code, and if your date doesn’t match or your name isn’t registered—you will be denied entry. No last-minute excuses work. You’ll be asked to return and complete registration online.

Trip Card for Commercial Vehicles

What Is the Trip Card for Commercial Vehicles?

If you’re traveling to Kedarnath in a commercial taxi (like a tour cab or rented vehicle), there’s an extra layer of verification required now. The Uttarakhand Transport Department mandates that each commercial vehicle must carry a Trip Card—a digital document that is linked with your Yatra registration.

Here’s what the Trip Card includes:

  • Name and mobile number of each registered passenger
  • Valid UTDB registration IDs of all pilgrims
  • Full details of the driver (name, license number, photo)
  • Vehicle number, RC details, and permit validity

This Trip Card is generated and attached during the online registration process for commercial tour operators or taxi vendors. It’s submitted before the journey begins and is checked at the first checkpoint (usually at Dehradun or Rishikesh).

Why Is the Trip Card Important?

  • Without it, commercial vehicles are not allowed to cross key check posts.
  • It ensures that the vehicle is authorized, and that all passengers are genuinely registered.
  • It’s also used to track vehicles in case of emergencies or weather disruptions.

Pro Tip: If you’re booking a tour package, ask your operator if your vehicle is registered and whether your Trip Card is attached. At Travel Vaidya, we handle this step for all our guests—your QR pass and trip card are both pre-verified before the journey starts.

Got Helicopter Tickets? You Still Need This!

Many people wrongly assume that booking a Kedarnath helicopter ticket means automatic registration. That’s false.

Even if you’ve booked through IRCTC or private heli operators, you still have to register on the UTDB portal.

Failure to do so = No boarding at helipad + possible ticket cancellation without refund.

Offline vs Online Registration – What’s Better?

Let’s be honest—online registration is the smarter choice, no matter where you’re coming from. While offline counters are available at Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Sonprayag, they’re often crowded, slow, and time taking during peak season.

If you wait till the last minute, here’s what can go wrong:

  • Long queues at offline counters
  • Limited daily slots—they can run out
  • Wasted time and possible delays in your darshan
  • Higher stress, especially for families and senior citizens

Online registration on the other hand, is fast, free, and confirmed instantly with a downloadable QR pass. You can do it from your mobile, even while planning your stay or transport.

What If You’re Doing the Full Char Dham Yatra?

You’ll need to register separately for each dham—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri. Luckily, you can do it all in one single form. Just tick the destinations and select travel dates accordingly.

What Documents Do You Need for Registration ?

Here’s what to keep handy during online registration and while traveling:

  • Government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar/Passport/Voter ID)
  • Mobile number and email ID for OTP verification
  • Travel itinerary or date of darshan
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Helicopter ticket (if applicable)
  • Emergency contact number

Need to Change Travel Dates Later?

Yes, you can edit your travel dates or cancel registration directly from the portal. But there’s a catch:

  • You can only reschedule once
  • Changes must be made at least 48 hours in advance
  • Updated Yatra pass must be re-downloaded and carried
