Weather can affect every Char Dham Yatra package by road. Heavy rain, landslides, snowfall, traffic restrictions and local authority instructions can delay travel or temporarily close sections of the route.
What may happen during disruption
Planning recommendation: Keep at least one buffer day after the scheduled tour, especially before a return flight or train. Additional hotels, meals or vehicle use caused by weather or road closures should be handled according to the confirmed package policy.

Most of the time the best months for a road tour to Char Dham Yatra with your family are May, June, September and October. May and June have better weather with sunny days. The roads are usually clear and there aren’t as many weather-related accidents. But during the summer break from school, there are more people and more traffic.
From Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun Char Dham Yatra by car takes at least 10 days and from New Delh it takes 12 days. This gives you time for mountain roads, reasonable daily driving hours, stops at temples and overnight stays. Families travelling with older people might want to plan for more rest days. Going at a slower pace can help with getting used to the higher altitude, but it doesn’t completely eliminate the risk of getting altitude sickness.
When planning your Char Dham Yatra, you should include one or two extra days in case the weather causes delays or roads close. Leave these extra days between the end of your tour and your flight or train back home, just in case the trip takes longer than planned.
Yes, everyone in the family has to sign up for visiting Char Dham Yatra, even kids and older people. The official Uttarakhand Tourism registration portal is where you can sign up your whole family. Make sure that the information about each traveller and the dates of their Dham visits are entered properly as not done so can disqualify you for darshan. Also, keep a copy of each person’s registration letter with the QR code on it as government officials check this before your enter the temple.
Bring your original Aadhaar card or passport, printed copies of your family’s Char Dham Yatra registration and the vouchers you used to book your hotel. Keep these papers close at hand so they can be checked at Yatra checkpoints and hotel check-ins.
Start training about 3-4 weeks before departure with regular walks, increasing the length as your fitness improves. If possible, practise walking up and down stairs gently wearing the shoes you will wear on the trip. Don’t do a lot of exercise right before you travel, build up your stamina. If you’re a senior citizen or have an underlying health condition, talk to your doctor about what activity is right for you. Physical training will help with walking but will not avoid altitude sickness or replace appropriate rest on the vacation.
The official health advise notably requests travellers over 55 and those with heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure or diabetes to get a health check-up before flying. It is not a general necessity to get an advance medical certificate for every guest. However, during the Yatra, the travellers have to follow the relevant health-screening guidelines. Before you go, check the latest requirements, carry prescriptions and essential medical records and discuss the itinerary with your doctor. Don’t travel if your doctor says you shouldn’t.
With the right help some older tourists can manage the journey, but a road trip still involves steps, uneven terrain and changing between cars and lodging. Pony or palki services are available at Yamunotri and Kedarnath. At other temples support is available depending on the local conditions. This kind of thing doesn’t stop altitude exposure or bodily discomfort. Before booking, talk to the tourist about their mobility and medical health, check hotel accessibility and find out who will help them on the trip. Don’t think everything is wheelchair accessible.
Families do travel with children, but suitability will depend on the child’s age, health and ability to cope with lengthy journeys, cold weather and altitude. Before booking, consult a paediatrician, especially newborns and very young children. Opt for a flexible schedule with frequent meals, breaks and reasonable travel days. Carry familiar snacks, warm clothing and prescribed medications. Watch out for excessive weariness, poor appetite, vomiting or change in behaviour. Seek medical help rather than thinking the child is just tired from travelling.
Even in May and June, you will need warm clothes and rain gear. The lower villages can feel comfortable in the daytime but it can get significantly colder in the mornings and evenings especially in higher regions like Kedarnath. Bring layers of gear to put on, such as a warm jacket, cap, gloves, and extra socks. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so bring a raincoat or poncho. Keep your jacket and rain gear in your day bag, rather than stashed away on the top of the vehicle.
Pack comfortable walking or hiking shoes with an excellent grip, a secure fit and soles ideal for rainy or difficult paths. Walk them a few times, before you leave, to see whether they rub or feel uncomfortable. For the journey to Yamunotri and Kedarnath do not depend on slippers, shoes with smooth soles or brand new shoes. Bring additional socks and light weight slippers for usage in accommodation. Your shoes should be roomy enough for your toes to move downhill but still tight enough so your feet don’t slide around inside.
Try to limit everyone to one small suitcase or soft travel bag and a small daypack. There is no set airline style baggage allowance in a road tour, space available will depend on the vehicle and number of people. Before packing, check your luggage allowance, especially if travelling with a huge family group. Pack only the essentials, clothes, toiletries and medicines and protect your possessions from rain. Pack the daypack with documents, valuables, warm layers and daily medication for easy access on the go.
Yes. There are bathrooms at many hotels, restaurants, petrol pump and public facilities along the way, but cleanliness and availability can vary. There are fewer good stopping places in some mountain stretches, so use reasonable facilities when you find them. If older family members or children require frequent breaks, let your driver know in advance. Bring tissues, hand sanitiser, soap and a little cash for paid facilities. Not all stops will have Western bathrooms so discuss any specific accessibility requirements before the tour starts.
Yamunotri takes about 6 kilometres each way from Janki Chatti, while Kedarnath is about 17 km each way from Gaurikund. These stretches may have pony or palki support. Gangotri and Badrinath are accessible by road but you will have to walk from the parking or drop-off place where you are allowed. Expect to walk farther, take more steps and stand in longer lines at each temple, especially if traffic limitations mean you have to park further away.
In most cases during the Yatra season, your tour cab will drop you at Sonprayag or the approved parking location, and not at Gaurikund. From there take the local shuttle service to Gaurikund where the Kedarnath trek begins. Parking regulations may change based on traffic and official direction. Allow extra time to get to the shuttle stop, for registration checks and lineups. Before leaving the hotel, check your drop-off location, shuttle arrangements and where your driver will pick you up after the journey.
Be ready for an uphill walk of about 5-6 kms one way from Janki Chatti. Leave your hotel early enough to allow for the drive, parking and assistance arrangements before you start the trek. Wear familiar shoes with good grip. Take rainwear, a warm layer, water, light snacks and essential medicines. Walk at a comfortable pace with breaks and keep your bag light. If someone’s plan is to use a pony or a palki, they should be procured beforehand and not when already tired on the trail.
Kedarnath trek is a difficult part of the trip, so get ready for it by walking a lot before you go. Verify with the agency on accommodation, assistance required and trekking arrangements needed for the day. Take a light overnight bag and have warm clothing, rainwear, food, water and any medicines you may need close to hand. Start early. Relax and take frequent breaks. Don’t rush a same day return just to save time. If you have any worrying symptoms such as breathlessness at rest, chest pain or confusion seek medical help immediately.
Normally your main luggage can be left at your hotel in Guptkashi, Sitapur or your agreed overnight stop, subject to storage being confirmed with the hotel and your tour co-ordinator. You only need to carry a small bag with the essentials for the Kedarnath trip and for overnight stay. Keep money, original photo ID, registration papers and medicines with you. Label your larger bags and check your arrangements for collection before you leave. If you are going to another hotel after you finish the trek then you can either keep the luggage in the vehicle itself or at the same hotel and you can collect the luggage after the trek is completed.
Accommodation at Kedarnath is basic, consisting of dharamshalas, lodges or guest houses, with facilities that can vary greatly from hotels found elsewhere on the route. Check whether your booking includes a private or shared room, attached or common bathroom, bedding and meals. Hot water, heating and charging should be provided with separate controls. Even a premium road package can have a simple Kedarnath stay. Don’t forget to take along basic toiletries and warm nightwear.
Dress simply, in clothes that cover your shoulders and knees and allow you to move easily on steps and uneven paths. Warm layers look great with trousers, salwar suits and other comfortable bottoms. Don’t wear loose clothes that drag on the ground when you are trekking. Bring a jacket or shawl, as you may spend time waiting outside. Each temple has its own rules about removing shoes and bringing items inside. Pack clothes for walking comfort and changing weather, and have an extra dry layer available after rain.
When your major package payments are already made, then as a practical starting allowance for a 10-12 day tour, carry about ₹10,000-₹15,000 per adult. This is a recommended reserve for spending, not a strict rule. Keep aside funds for pony or palki services, porters, special pujas and unforeseen expenses, which can considerably add to your needs. Maintain a variety of small denominations, divide cash securely between responsible adults and maintain digital payment options. Adjust the amount to your intended services and package exclusions.
UPI can be used where the merchant accepts it and both the payment service and mobile connection are up and running. But you shouldn’t rely on it for every purchase in remote villages or trekking routes. Transactions can be delayed by weak signal, power outages and temporary network congestion. Carry cash for small purchases, local transport and places where digital payments are not accepted. If the payment is still pending, you can check the status and retry or pay again. Ask the merchant to confirm receipt.
You can consider Airtel & Jio because it has documented coverage in the 4 Dhams and the Kedarnath trekking route. But no operator can guarantee a reliable signal in every valley, village or hotel. Check current coverage for your overnight stops and if staying connected is important, consider carrying a second SIM from another operator. Download registration documents and contact details prior to departure. Bring a power bank, and arrange meeting spots rather than depending on calls alone.
Other expenses include travel to and from the starting city, lunches, snacks, pony or palki services, porters, personal purchases and special pujas. The temples routes being open, travel can be possible. Monsoon is generally a less suitable choice for a family road tour. Heavy rain can lead to landslides, falling debris, slippery walking paths and unpredictable road closures. July and August are especially risky months, and the disruption can spill over into other times of the year. If your dates fall in this period, keep your plans flexible and keep an eye on official weather advisories and adhere to local restrictions. If warnings or route closures make travel unsafe, postpone your trip.
Photography video recording inside the temples are not permitted, and the restrictions may extend to the surrounding temple premises. Current arrangements can require visitors to deposit phones or cameras before entering specified areas. Follow the signs and instructions at each Dham, rather than assuming that you can always take photographs outdoors. You are only permitted to take photographs in designated areas and should not obstruct queues or disturb worshippers. If your family intends to split, find out where you can store your devices and how you can pick them up later, before you go in.
Yes, ATMs in several towns along the route, including the larger overnight and transit centers, but don’t expect to find a working machine when you need cash. Remote ATMs may run out of cash, or have connectivity or power issues, especially during busy periods. Get your main requirement of cash before leaving Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun and replenish it at suitable towns as and when required. Keep some smaller notes for local purchases and have a back up payment option throughout the trip.
